Have you thought about setting important goals for yourself but later realized that nothing or a little was achieved? Year after year many people focus on various things to improve and goals to achieve. Setting up your personal goals is important because when people don’t have a direction, they may end up somewhere they don’t really want to be. Without the goals, there will be a lack of direction and focus.
Before setting up your personal goals, think about the things you truly want in life. Where do you see yourself a year from now? What do you want to change about yourself and your current life so that you can get closer to that vision?
In order to effectively accomplish personal goals, it is recommended to use SMART goal setting criteria. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Bound. You don’t have to follow this sequence precisely and you are free to create your own variation. But in essence, this approach will help you to stay focused and motivated on achieving your goals.
Make Your Goal SpecificOne of the common mistake people make is they set goals that are vague or too broad in definition. Goals such as “I want to travel” or “I want to lose weight” are too broad. Since these goals are not specific, it is harder to keep track of its progress. When we are unclear about our goals, or the end result that we are reaching for, it can be hard to follow the plan of action.
Think about the things that you are trying to achieve. Push your fears aside to gain a glimpse of where it is that you are heading. Write a plan of action or steps on how you can achieve it. Don’t set too many limitations and make your plan’s criteria flexible.
When your mind is focused on a positive outcome, rather than on fears or an unclear future, your brain begins to plan for the desired result. Become active approaching your dreams and it will bring you closer to achieving your goal.

Make Your Goal Measurable and AttainableGoals require careful consideration of what you are planning to achieve and a lot of hard work to actually do it. Setting dates or amounts will help you measure and track your achievements. Break the work process into several smaller steps and do each task daily or for a specific amount of time. Identify the areas in your life that need work and set milestones to reach your goal.
More often we postpone working on something because the thought of getting started can daunt us. Making the first step can be challenging, so start with the tackling of your most difficult task first. Once you overcome your biggest obstacle in the form of a big first task, motivation will increase. As a result, the rest of your tasks or ambitions will seem less daunting.
Once you’ve created simple steps to achieve your goal, examine how attainable it is in your present life. Ask yourself if this goal is relevant to you and is it possible to achieve it. The critical thinking will help you discover whether your goal is self-motivated or a result of expectations from other people that you have internalized. Achieving a goal is not an easy process, and it’s important to know that you are doing it to be your best self.
Stay Focused and RelevantWhen trying to achieve goals, many people tend to do many things at once. Whether it is their social life, career or family life, taking care of too many things at once will make it hard to stay focused on your goals. In this case, prioritizing the important tasks can help in a process. The goals should be consistent and relevant to the direction you want your life to take.
Start to develop direction to better guide you toward achieving your goals. Small, measurable goals that you can work on a day-to-day basis are ideal when you are looking to accomplish something in your life. Being overwhelmed and burned out can have a negative impact on self-motivation. And you don’t want to scare yourself before you’ve even set off.
Consistency brings results, but you need to be patient and do your tasks long enough to see any progress. The progress may not be visible in the beginning. You may not be losing any weight even though you’re dieting or you may not get any real-life experience after you took the college classes for the first few months.
The change will happen when you’ve put in enough effort and time. Once it does, you’ll feel great about yourself and that sense of accomplishment will help you to move forward. Look for the ways to stay on track no matter what. Don’t let other people to discourage you or distractions get in the way. Keep going and sooner or later you will succeed.
Stay MotivatedIf you feel that the process toward achieving your goals is long and tiring, remind yourself regularly of what it is that you are working to achieve. Create a dream board with pictures of the end result, practice daily affirmations, read motivational stories and do similar inspirations. If you dream about losing weight, keep a picture of your dream body nearby. If you are working long hours and dream about traveling, keep pictures of your favorite locations around your workspace.
The end result is what you need to have in mind not only to be on the right track but to also get a motivation boost every time you visualize it.
Setting priorities requires sacrificing present time for future enjoyment. Priorities require giving up a short-term pleasure in the present and to be able to enjoy a more substantial and greater enjoyment in the future.
Don’t forget to reward yourself after completing each task to stay motivated. If you don’t have enough will power or can’t focus on your ambitions, set little rewards. Promise yourself a reward after the completion of each milestone. If you are on the quest of losing weight, for example, reward yourself with new clothes.
Being good to yourself, enjoying your experience and having fun will help you to stay positive, motivated and, as a result, more productive.
